Endurance, Wisdom, and Genuine Faith
James quotes Prov 3:34 in its Greek form: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (Jas 4:6). Before God’s speeches, Job says “I place my hand over my mouth” (Job 40:4) and finally “I repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:6).
Eliphaz states a true principle — God “will save the lowly” (Job 22:29) — but applies it wrongly to Job. Correct doctrine can be misused in counsel.
Humility before God includes accepting that we do not see the whole picture (Job 42:3).
Quoted in Jas 4:6 (and 1Pet 5:5) in its Greek (LXX) form: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Quotes Prov 3:34 like Jas 4:6, then: humble yourselves, resist the devil — the same sequence as Jas 4:6-10.
